You have so many friends and family members salivating for your dishes and snacks, so you think it would be worthwhile to try to find a niche market for your tasty, original food. But there’s one problem. You don’t know how to launch a product. Come along as we teach you how to launch a new food product in these very simple steps.

What is your product?

In the food industry, you can find anything. From an aromatic blend of spices to a sumptuous ready-to-eat TV dinner. You must know your product before narrowing your niche. Does your product need to be refrigerated? Can it be organic? Is it shippable? These questions seem far-fetched and may come up again during the process, but it is important to know what your product is and how your customer (distributors, suppliers, consumers), and end-user will interact with it.

Who’s going to buy it?

You need to know your market, your competitors, and your values as a company. It all comes together because knowing who your customers might be, can make it easier to brand your product. Consider the type of person who will purchase your product and what will appeal to them most about it. Customers may be attracted to your products based on the ingredients you've used, the brand's values, or even the price.

How much does it cost? Does the packaging look good?

This is a very important step of your journey, and you should be a few steps ahead if you have considered various factors in the first step. Here you can express what you want your visuals to say about your product. The price and packaging are going to determine if your product is a premium product, or one available to the average person. For example, using dark colours with golden serif fonts and lines usually denotes that a product is le crème de la crème, and a high price tag usually follows. Products advertised to young, bubbly people are usually themed with bright colours such as hot pink, amber and electric blue. Pastel colours such as pistachio or olive green coupled with shades of brown usually indicate that a product is organic. Whatever design and price you decide, make sure that it is appealing to your target audience.

Does the perfect customer like it?

This is where you finally get to know if it is a viable product. It is all fun and games when your friends and family (and hopefully a few blind tasters) talk your food up to the standards of Masaharu Morimoto in a jar. But this is the moment of truth. Does your ideal end consumer like the product? Would they be willing to spend the agreed price on the product? Look for food and drink festivals for cheap (or even free) exposure. Create questionnaires to allow tasters to evaluate key aspects such as taste, price, and packaging. It may also be possible to increase awareness of yourself and your product by offering free, public taste tests.

Your journey to creating a high-quality food and drink product is just the beginning, and the thought of tackling all the tasks yourself may seem too daunting, but it is necessary in order to take your product to the next level. Check out more business advice in our blog.
